Stephen Smith

Director and Design Director

In March 2019, he co-founded Tabula with CEO Ryo, and now serves as Design Director. As well as creative direction, Stephen also specialises in digital product design, having started his career designing online services in the UK. He went on to further deepen his experience working for design agencies for such clients as Virgin, IBM, BNP Paribas and Red Bull. His love of all aspects of visual design brought him eventually to Japan, attracted by the country’s unique and refined visual style. He set up his own design practice here in 2008 working on graphic and web design projects for a variety of clients, eventually moving back into digital service design as Tokyo’s startup industry took off. He now acts as Tabula’s full stack UI/UX design lead. He has a BSc (Hons) degree in Digital Media Design from Plymouth University (i-DAT Open Research Lab).
